Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art through her aunt Denise as a young child. Her aunt was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could spend all daytime hours to reading, art, theater and other interests. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread the cause of activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who had a strong social conscience and advised DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton was a summer resident at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights marches that were historic across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama led her later on to create a documentary about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given the responsibility of looking over the residence and scrutinizing the rubbish of one jurors. After being disappointed in journalism and the jobs she was handed, DuVernay was inspired to start a new career in the field of publicity. DuVernay was brought on straight after graduating from college as the junior publicist for the studio that was small. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company that was named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also established a range of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
